Fred Gale lectures <strong>in</strong> political economy, Third World development <strong>and</strong> regional<br />

economic <strong>in</strong>tegration at the School of Government, University of Tasmania,<br />

Australia. He researches global forest governance, product certification <strong>and</strong> the<br />

political economy of trade <strong>and</strong> the environment. His publications <strong>in</strong>clude The<br />

Tropical Timber Trade Regime (Macmillan/Palgrave, 1998); Nature, Production, Power:<br />

Towards an Ecological Political Economy (Edward Elgar 2000, co-edited with Michael<br />

M’Gonigle); <strong>and</strong> Sett<strong>in</strong>g the St<strong>and</strong>ard: <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> <strong>in</strong> British Columbia <strong>and</strong><br />

Beyond (forthcom<strong>in</strong>g, with Chris Tollefson, David Haley <strong>and</strong> Denise Allen). With<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g from the Australian Research Council, he is undertak<strong>in</strong>g comparative<br />

research with Marcus Haward on state responses to forestry <strong>and</strong> fisheries certification<br />

<strong>in</strong> Canada, Australia <strong>and</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />

William Gombya-Ssembajjwe, is an associate Professor <strong>and</strong> Head of <strong>Forest</strong><br />

Management at the Faculty of <strong>Forest</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> Nature Conservation, Makerere<br />

University, <strong>in</strong> Kampala, Ug<strong>and</strong>a. He obta<strong>in</strong>ed his Ph.D. from University of Wales,<br />

Bangor, UK, his Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Management from the Australian National<br />

University, Canberra, Australia <strong>and</strong> his Bachelor’s of Science degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry from<br />

Makerere University. He is the leader of Ug<strong>and</strong>a <strong>Forest</strong>ry Research Centre (UFRIC),<br />

a collaborat<strong>in</strong>g research centre of the International <strong>Forest</strong>ry Resources <strong>and</strong><br />

Institutions (IFRI) based at Indiana University USA. His current research <strong>in</strong>terests are<br />

the total valuation of tropical moist forests, <strong>in</strong>digenous knowledge <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

forest management, <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>centives for susta<strong>in</strong>able forest management<br />

<strong>and</strong> effects of urbanisation on susta<strong>in</strong>able forest management. Dr. Gombya-<br />

Ssembajjwe has over 20 publications <strong>and</strong> carries out consultancy work <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

forest management. He is the 2005 recipient of the American Biographical Institute’s<br />

Man of the Year Commemorative Medal for dedication toward his profession <strong>and</strong> the<br />

example he has set for his peers <strong>and</strong> community.<br />

Elizabeth Gordon served as the Yale Program on <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong>’s Program<br />

Associate until 2005, where she oversaw all aspects of the program, manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

program staff <strong>and</strong> projects, coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong> events, <strong>and</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g as a liaison to Yale<br />

<strong>and</strong> the outside community. She has a BA from Stanford University <strong>in</strong> Human<br />

Biology <strong>and</strong> a Master’s of Environmental Management from Yale’s School of <strong>Forest</strong>ry<br />

& Environmental Studies. Her graduate work focused on an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

approach to wildlife conservation <strong>and</strong> advocacy, earn<strong>in</strong>g her recognition as a Doris<br />

Duke Conservation Fellow <strong>and</strong> a Teresa He<strong>in</strong>z Scholar for Environmental Research.<br />

Previously she pursued a range of environmental efforts, from grassroots organiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> local wildlife rehabilitation to research <strong>and</strong> outreach with national non-profits<br />

such as the Environmental Law Institute <strong>and</strong> Environmental Defense.<br />

H<strong>and</strong>o Ha<strong>in</strong> has an M.Sc. degree <strong>in</strong> L<strong>and</strong>scape Ecology <strong>and</strong> Environmental<br />

Protection <strong>and</strong> is presently study<strong>in</strong>g to acquire a Ph.D. degree <strong>in</strong> human geography at<br />

the Institute of Geography, University of Tartu, Estonia. His professional experience<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes manag<strong>in</strong>g several forestry-related projects <strong>in</strong> Estonian’s largest<br />

environmenal NGO, Estonian Green Movement-Friends of the Earth. He has also<br />

yale school of forestry & environmental studies
