Guatemala. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1994, he has been work<strong>in</strong>g with various NGOs <strong>in</strong> the fields of<br />

natural forest management, community organization, protected areas, <strong>and</strong> forest<br />

certification. He worked as manager of Fundac<strong>in</strong> Naturaleza para la Vida (NPV) <strong>and</strong><br />

elaborated jo<strong>in</strong>tly with WWF project proposals for the development of tools to<br />

facilitate group certification <strong>in</strong> the Maya Biosphere Reserve. He has also been<br />

participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> certification assessments, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the strengthen<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

community-based forest management.<br />

Dwi Rahmad Muhtaman, a certification specialist, has been work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> forestry issues<br />

<strong>and</strong> biodiversity policy for more than ten years. He has conducted social audits of<br />

certification <strong>and</strong> assessments of fifteen forest concessions, plantations <strong>and</strong><br />

community-private partnership companies <strong>in</strong> Indonesia. He is actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

cha<strong>in</strong> of custody certification assessments. Mr. Muhtaman is lead writer of a book<br />

Criteria <strong>and</strong> Indicators for Susta<strong>in</strong>able Plantation <strong>Forest</strong>ry <strong>in</strong> Indonesia published by<br />

CIFOR. He has written a manual on certification for practitioners <strong>in</strong> collaboration<br />

with The Nature Conservancy, LATIN <strong>and</strong> SmartWood Indonesia. He has been<br />

facilitat<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> workshops for companies, government, communities <strong>and</strong><br />

NGOs as well as multi-stakeholders events. He is now an <strong>in</strong>dependent auditor for<br />

Indonesia <strong>Forest</strong> Trade Network (WWF Indonesia) <strong>and</strong> Technical Advisor for<br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able Supply Cha<strong>in</strong> L<strong>in</strong>kage Program, Program for Eastern Indonesia Small-<br />

Medium Enterprises Assistance of the International F<strong>in</strong>ance Corporation (the World<br />

Bank Group). He was LEI caretaker dur<strong>in</strong>g 2004-March 2005. He is a found<strong>in</strong>g<br />

member of the Indonesian Tropical Institute (LATIN), <strong>and</strong> the former Director of the<br />

<strong>Certification</strong> <strong>and</strong> Consult<strong>in</strong>g Division. He served as a coord<strong>in</strong>ator for SmartWood-<br />

LATIN Initiative <strong>and</strong> was a SmartWood <strong>in</strong>ternational collaborator <strong>in</strong> Indonesia. He<br />

currently works as an <strong>in</strong>dependent consultant. He holds a Master of Public<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Auburn University, Alabama, USA.<br />

Polycarp Musimami Mwima is presently Program Officer <strong>in</strong> charge of Monitor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> Evaluation with the Environmental Conservation Trust of Ug<strong>and</strong>a. Previously,<br />

Mr. Mwima was the National Biodiversity Data Bank Manager at Makerere University<br />

(MU) Institute of Environment <strong>and</strong> Natural Resources. He has been a Coord<strong>in</strong>ator<br />

for the MU - GEF Cross-Border Biodiversity project, which tra<strong>in</strong>ed stakeholders <strong>in</strong><br />

agro-forestry, collaborative <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able management of natural resources;<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> evaluation programme; <strong>and</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g databases for<br />

the two project sites <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a. He has worked as a researcher on Ug<strong>and</strong>an protected<br />

areas <strong>and</strong> published several ecological papers <strong>and</strong> reports. Privately, he has been<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g consultancies with<strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a support<strong>in</strong>g conservation of biological diversity.<br />

He is currently look<strong>in</strong>g at aspects of l<strong>and</strong> degradation <strong>in</strong> Tororo district, Eastern<br />

Ug<strong>and</strong>a, with a view of lay<strong>in</strong>g strategies for <strong>in</strong>creased production to alleviate poverty.<br />

He earned a Master of Environmental Science degree from Makerere University.<br />

Deanna Newsom is a specialist <strong>in</strong> forest certification <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able forest<br />

management, with a research focus on certification’s impacts <strong>and</strong> systems. She is<br />

author (with Benjam<strong>in</strong> Cashore <strong>and</strong> Graeme Auld) of the book Govern<strong>in</strong>g Through<br />

yale school of forestry & environmental studies
