Markets: <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Emergence of Non-State Authority (Yale<br />

University Press), recipient of the International Studies Association’s 2005 Harold <strong>and</strong><br />

Margaret Sprout Award for the best book of the year on environmental policy <strong>and</strong><br />

politics. Ms. Newsom holds a M.Sc. <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry (2001) <strong>and</strong> a B.Sc. <strong>in</strong> Biology (1995)<br />

<strong>and</strong> has published articles <strong>in</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Policy <strong>and</strong> Economics <strong>and</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> Politics, as<br />

well as chapters <strong>in</strong> edited books from CAB International <strong>and</strong> Transaction Press. She<br />

has worked for the Ra<strong>in</strong>forest Alliance s<strong>in</strong>ce 2001.<br />

Felix Chilekwa Njovu is currently a Lecturer <strong>in</strong> Economics, <strong>Forest</strong> Economics <strong>and</strong><br />

Biometry at Copperbelt University, Kitwe, Zambia, Head of the University’s <strong>Forest</strong><br />

Resource Management Department <strong>and</strong> Act<strong>in</strong>g Dean of the School of Natural<br />

Resources. He has worked extensively on beekeep<strong>in</strong>g projects <strong>and</strong> has researched the<br />

social <strong>and</strong> economic importance of a variety of non-timber forest products <strong>in</strong><br />

Zambia. He has contributed to national <strong>and</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial <strong>Forest</strong>ry Action Plans,<br />

analyz<strong>in</strong>g the role of forestry with<strong>in</strong> the economy. Other consultancy work <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

socioeconomic studies of management plans for the certification of the Ndola P<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Plantations. He is a member of the Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee for CIFOR (Southern Africa)<br />

on Management of Miombo <strong>Forest</strong>ry project <strong>and</strong> a board member for the Institute<br />

of Environmental Management. He holds a Master of Science <strong>in</strong> forest economics<br />

from the University of Hels<strong>in</strong>ki, F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>, a Bachelor of Science from Soko<strong>in</strong>e<br />

University of Agriculture (Tanzania), <strong>and</strong> a Diploma <strong>in</strong> forestry from Zambia <strong>Forest</strong><br />

College.<br />

Piotr Paschalis-Jakubowicz is a Professor <strong>in</strong> the Faculty of <strong>Forest</strong>ry at Warsaw<br />

Agricultural University. He has been head of the Department of <strong>Forest</strong> Utilization<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 1998. Major <strong>in</strong>ternational appo<strong>in</strong>tments have <strong>in</strong>cluded: Chairman of the<br />

<strong>Forest</strong>ry Sector of COST; member of the <strong>Forest</strong>ry St<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g Committee-European<br />

Union; President of European Union of <strong>Forest</strong>ers (1998-2005); Polish representative<br />

to the Convention on Biological Diversity; Program Coord<strong>in</strong>ator to the Global<br />

Environment Facility <strong>in</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Program; Consultant to the Belarus, Slovak <strong>and</strong><br />

Ukra<strong>in</strong>e GEF Projects. He has published widely, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a number of textbooks,<br />

scientific articles <strong>and</strong> other publications.<br />

Gustavo P<strong>in</strong>elo graduated as <strong>Forest</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer at the University of San Carlos,<br />

Guatemala. Currently he works as coord<strong>in</strong>ator at the Petén office of TREES/<br />

RAINFOREST ALLIANCE, <strong>in</strong> particular as regards added value to lesser known<br />

timber <strong>and</strong> non-timber species. He has more than 10 years of experience <strong>in</strong> forestry,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the design <strong>and</strong> implementation of <strong>in</strong>tegrated forest management plans <strong>in</strong><br />

the Maya Biosphere Reserve. He has conducted various consultancies regard<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

accomplishment of certification requirements by community groups, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

assessments of forest management, cha<strong>in</strong> of custody <strong>and</strong> annual audits (SmartWood<br />

Program), along with the evaluation of the development of small <strong>and</strong> medium forest<br />

enterprises (CATIE/MIF Project).<br />
