Cefut au cours d'une visite que je fis au château de Crénan, dans les Côtes-du-Nord, à mon cousin le baron Jean Grivel, petit-fls du vice-amiral baron Grivel, mon grand-oncle, que j'appris l'existence d'un manuscrit où le vieil amiral avait noté ses souvenirs, malheureusement d'une brièveté regrettable et, qu'en outre, un brusque arrêt interrompt à une époque très éloignée cependant de la fin de la carrière active même de l'amiral. Extrêmement intéressé par leur lecture, j'estimai que c'était un devoir de faire connaître tous ces détails souvent inédits de la grande époque, ainsi que les curieuses obser- vations recueillies par l'ancien marin de la Garde, qui appré- ciait avec tant de bon sens et d'esprit les pays qu'il parcourait et les personnes que les circonstances lui faisaient connaître. J'obtins du baron Jean l'autorisation de tenter la publi- cation de ces souvenirs, qui, conservés précieusement par Mme Le Saulnier de la Cour, fille du vice-amiral baron Grivel, étaient devenus la propriété du petit-fils , chef de la famille. Je suis persuadé de l'intérêt captivant que causera la lecture de ces faits passionnants, qui touchent à tant de choses différentes et souvent même surprenantes. Ils permettent de juger la mentalité de la jeunesse de cette époque, son enthou- siasme, son vrai et absolu patriotisme. Je ne doute pas de l'émotion fortifiante qu'ils produiront sur la génération nouvelle qui paraît très pénétrée du dévoue- ment à la Patrie et des sacrifices complets qu'il impose. Quels magnifiques exemples d'abnégation, d'insouciance des intérêts personnels, du peu d'importance qu'on attachait alors au bien-être et à sa propre existence ! Tout pour celui qui représentait avec tant d'éclat, de bonheur et d'intelligence a
