being considered a part of the German civilization. In Gressoney, however, local people
as well as newcomers claim to be members of the Wallis community, irrespective
of whether or not they speak the Wallis German dialect. There is no doubt that these
“diffuse ethnicities” are not very helpful for the preservation of the German language
pockets. On the contrary, we are witnessing the emergence of a new ethnic awareness,
whereby standard language and language competency no longer constitute the
most important elements for identifying ethnic groups. Instead, ethnic identity is increasingly
expressed through subjective factors (ethnic self-assessment) as well as in the
relationship to the respective village.
The present study assumes that it will not be favorable for the preservation of the
“German-speaking islands” if their population completely loses its link to standard
German. Consequently, it seems legitimate to claim that the financial support provided
by the new law protecting the ethno-linguistic minorities in Italy will also be used for
the purpose of intensifying the teaching of standard German.
