be<strong>in</strong>g considered a part of the German civilization. In Gressoney, however, local people<br />

as well as newcomers claim to be members of the Wallis community, irrespective<br />

of whether or not they speak the Wallis German dialect. There is no doubt that these<br />

“diffuse ethnicities” are not very helpful for the preservation of the German language<br />

pockets. On the contrary, we are witness<strong>in</strong>g the emergence of a new ethnic awareness,<br />

whereby standard language and language competency no longer constitute the<br />

most important elements for identify<strong>in</strong>g ethnic groups. Instead, ethnic identity is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

expressed through subjective factors (ethnic self-assessment) as well as <strong>in</strong> the<br />

relationship to the respective village.<br />

The present study assumes that it will not be favorable for the preservation of the<br />

“German-speak<strong>in</strong>g islands” if their population completely loses its l<strong>in</strong>k to standard<br />

German. Consequently, it seems legitimate to claim that the f<strong>in</strong>ancial support provided<br />

by the new law protect<strong>in</strong>g the ethno-l<strong>in</strong>guistic m<strong>in</strong>orities <strong>in</strong> Italy will also be used for<br />

the purpose of <strong>in</strong>tensify<strong>in</strong>g the teach<strong>in</strong>g of standard German.<br />
