LAIKU ATŠALKAS: ŽURNĀLISTIKA, KINO, POLITIKAMārtiņš KaprānsDoctoral student, University of Latvia, Department of Communications StudiesREPRESENTATION OF THE SOVIET ERAIN CONTEMPORARY LATVIAN PROSE (2000-2006)Keywords: Fictional narrative, mediated past, textual community, social identityThis paper is focused on Latvian prose that was written and published during the first period ofthe new millennium – prose which included fictional representations of the Soviet era. The authorhas evaluated the efforts that can be seen in these texts to mediate the past. Literary representationof the Soviet period has been analysed in the paper from two perspectives – episodes fromthe past, and social groups. Both of these elements are derived from the “narrative paradigm,”showing that fictional texts offer a view about the Soviet era in Latvia which is typical of urbanresidents and, more likely, the cultural elite of Latvia in the present era.233
