A LAW TO REGULATE AND CONTROL IMMIGRATION.<br />

BE it enacted by His Excellency the Govemor and<br />

Commander-in-Chief of the Q^ony of <strong>Cyprus</strong> as<br />

follows:—<br />

1. This Law may be cited as the Immigration Law, 1936.<br />

2. In this Law—<br />

" aUen " means a person who is not a British subject<br />

or a native of the Colony ;<br />

" destitute person " means a person who is or is likely<br />

to become incapable of supporting himself and his<br />

dependants or who is likely to become a charge upon<br />

pubUc funds;<br />

^ immigrant" means an aUen who, not being a<br />

permanent resident therein, lawfully enters the Colony<br />

for the purpose of residing there permanently;<br />

" native of the Colony " means—<br />

(a) any person who has obtained the status of a<br />

British subject by virtue of the <strong>Cyprus</strong> (Annexation)<br />

Orders in Council, 1914 to 1929, or by reason of<br />

the grant by the Govemor of a certificate of<br />

naturaUzation under the British Nationality and<br />

Status of AUens Act, 1914;<br />

{h) any person bom in the Colony or of parents who<br />

at the time of his birth were ordinarity resident<br />

in the Colony ;<br />

(c) the wife of a person to whom any of the foregoing<br />

paragraphs applies not Uving apart from such person<br />

under a decree of a competent Court or of a deed<br />

of separation ;<br />

(d) the child, stepchild or adopted child having been<br />

adopted in a manner recognized by law, under the<br />

age of eighteen years, of a person to whom any of<br />

the foregoing paragraphs appUes;<br />

" passport " means a vaUd passport or other document<br />

issued by a competent authority estabUshing the<br />

nationality (if any) and identity of the person to whom<br />

it refers ;<br />

• permanent resident" means a person whether a<br />

British subject, a native of the Colony or an alien, who<br />

permanently resides in the Colony ;<br />

"port of entry" means any port which may be<br />

declared by the Govemor to be a port of entry for the<br />

purposes of this Law;<br />

'' prohibited immigrant " means a person whose entry<br />

into the Colony is prohibited by this Law or by any<br />

regulations made thereunder;<br />

" traveUer " means an aUen not being a permanent<br />

resident who lawfully enters the Colony for any purpose<br />

other than that of residing there permanently or of<br />

seeking or accepting employment therein.<br />
