It is hereby notified for general informati(Bi<br />

that on and from the lai of January, 1937,<br />

Private Poet Office Boxea may be rented under the<br />

following ccMiditions at the {wincipal Post Offices<br />

in the Colony. <strong>The</strong> renter will forfeit all rights by<br />

non-compliance or failure to carry out any or all<br />

of th© conditions hereinafter set forth, and will be<br />

held responsible for the observance of the conditions,<br />

and no other person wiU be recognized in<br />

connection therewith.<br />

CONDITIONS OF RENTAL.<br />

(a) <strong>The</strong> aimual rent is £1 for a small box and<br />

£1. lOs.Oji. for » large box. Tke rant is payabk<br />

in advance, and calculated firom the beginning<br />

of any calendar quarter to the Slst December in<br />

each year, any portion of a calendar quarter being<br />

considered as a fuU quarter. In the case of<br />

boxes at any summer resort offices the rent i»<br />

payable monthly in advance, any portion of a<br />

month being considered as a full month.<br />

(6) When the rental of a box expiree and<br />

payment for its renewal is not made within twelve<br />

days (or three days in the case of summer resort<br />

offices), the renter wiU forfeit his right to the box,<br />

which mav then be re-let by the Postmaster-<br />

General.<br />

(c) When a box is rented two keys wiU be<br />

suppUed and an amount of 7s. 4Jp., in addition to<br />

the rent of the box, \^ill be deposited by the renter.<br />

\Vhen the box is given up the amount deposited<br />

will be refimded to the renter, provided that the<br />

box and lock are in good ordw. and that the two<br />

original keys for the box ore retumed. Otherwise<br />

tlie deposit will be forfeited.<br />

(d) DeUvery into a private boxis in all respects<br />

equivalent to personal deUvery to the addressee.<br />

(e) A box must be taken for a particular address ;<br />

and postal packets for deUvery therein should,<br />

in addition to the number of the box, bear the<br />

fuD address. Postal packets bearing as an only<br />

address a Post Office Box number wiU be treated<br />

as insufficiently addressed and not deUvered.<br />

(f) Persons may not rent a private box under a<br />

fictitious name, or for improper purposes.<br />

(g) <strong>The</strong> businesa or private address of the renter<br />

must be fumished.<br />

(h) Persons or firms trading under two or more<br />

designations may be required to rent a IJOX for<br />

each designation. Under this regulation any<br />

group of companies havinir a joint management<br />

may be reqmred to rent a separate box for each<br />

company.<br />

(i) Several persons wiU not be permitted to<br />

share in one box. Thc use of each box is resti icted<br />

to the indi\-idual, firm, or bona fide empioyees<br />

or residents of the house to whom or to w':ich it<br />

may be assigned. A person not being a iciiter,<br />

whose correspondence is addressed to a box,<br />

can only obtain such by means of the , or<br />

through the renter.<br />

{)) Steel boxes are accessible at aU urs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hours for access to wooden boxes, whei ^uch<br />

are installed, will be made known to the IA ers.<br />

PRIVATK PO8T OFFICE BOXES.<br />

(k) Correspondence mis-sorted or errooeoosly<br />

addressed to a wrong box must be immediately<br />

re-posted with the words " not for Box No. . . ."<br />

written thereon. Should a case come under<br />

notioe where this is not done, or where flagrant<br />

neglect is shown by the r^iter, w person in possession<br />

ai the key, in detaining or delaying such<br />

correspondence the box may be declared forfeited<br />

and thc retum of the keys demanded.<br />

(/) Unless the renter be weU-known, or can be<br />

identified by some one known to a responsible<br />

officer of the Department, the only admitted<br />

" proof of identification" shall be the receipt<br />

for the rent of the box.<br />

(m) A box is for use exclusively for the reception<br />

of correspondence which has passed through the<br />

post. Any other articles placed therein by the<br />

renter will be surcharged as if posted out of course.<br />

(n) In exceptional circumstances—such as the<br />

loss of a key. for instanee—eorreepondence from<br />

any box may temporarily be deUvered at the<br />

counter subject to compUance with the provisions<br />

of condition (I).<br />

(o) ^Vhen a key of a box is lost, or the lock is<br />

broken, on receipt of Is. 4|p. in cash a new lock<br />

and keys will be suppUed. // a key be lost it is<br />

essential for the security of the correspondence thai<br />

a new lock be fitted to the box.<br />

(p) No lock, other than that suppUed by the<br />

Department, shaU be placed on any box; and no<br />

repairs to a box, lock or keys may be executed<br />

except by the Department.<br />

(q) <strong>The</strong> renter of a box must defray aU expenses<br />

for damage to such box or to the lock or keys<br />

thereof, if caused by him or dufiTto his neghgence.<br />

A renter giving up or forfeiting his box wiU be held<br />

responsible for the due return of the keys originaUy<br />

suppUed.<br />

(r) No box will l)e granted to any person who<br />

from any cause (non-payment of rent excepted)<br />

has previously forfeited his right to a box.<br />

(s) Transfer of a box in the same town from one<br />

person to another, or frGca one town to another,<br />

if th© renter changes his residence permanently,<br />

Avill be permitted only with the sanction of the<br />

Postmaster-General.<br />

(t) <strong>The</strong> Postmaster-General may refuse to let<br />

or re-let a box to any person -without a-ssigning<br />

any reason for such refusal.<br />

(u) <strong>The</strong> Post Office takes no responsibiUty for<br />

any delay to correspondence occasioned by the<br />

use of private boxes.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> foregoing conditions may at any time<br />

be augmented or revised, as may from time to<br />

time be deemed expedknt, by notificatioii in<br />

tlKB <strong>Cyprus</strong> <strong>Gazette</strong>; ajMi auy sucn addition or<br />

revision shaU apply to every box rented under the<br />

foregoing conditions.<br />

3. Post Office Notice dated the 21st March,<br />

1924, pubUshed under Notification No. 180 in the<br />

<strong>Cyprus</strong> <strong>Gazette</strong> No. 1630 of the 28th March, 1924,<br />

is hereby canceUed as from the lst January, 1937.<br />
