An Anti-<strong>Reduction</strong>ist Argument Based on Sp<strong>in</strong>oza’s Naturalism — Nancy Brenner-Golomb<br />

to use reason, so that <strong>the</strong>y passively accept <strong>the</strong>se leaders’<br />

ideas, as if <strong>the</strong>y necessarily provide <strong>the</strong> best way to satisfy<br />

everybody’s desire to live accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir nature <strong>in</strong><br />

peace <strong>and</strong> security [Sp<strong>in</strong>oza 1951 pp.215-216 <strong>and</strong> 313-<br />

315]. Sp<strong>in</strong>oza’s <strong>in</strong>tention with develop<strong>in</strong>g his political<br />

science was to show that <strong>the</strong> best way to satisfy this basic<br />

desire was to design civil laws which would encourage<br />

rationality <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reby prevent this behaviour of leaders.<br />

But my purpose <strong>in</strong> this paper is only to show that, at least<br />

when <strong>the</strong> study of <strong>the</strong> human m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

scientific project, it is impossible to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> that a<br />

structure has no effect on <strong>the</strong> structure of its elements.<br />

This is because, as Sp<strong>in</strong>oza ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed, to say that<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g is natural does not mean that it cannot be<br />

distorted [Sp<strong>in</strong>oza 1979 pp.139-140]. For example by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence of <strong>the</strong> natural behaviour of leaders.<br />
