genste<strong>in</strong> 1993, p. 143). In order to do this, <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

about <strong>the</strong> practice’s orig<strong>in</strong>s need not be true (it need not<br />

even be supposed to be true); it only needs to draw our<br />

attention to those aspects of <strong>the</strong> practice that are shared<br />

by ones <strong>in</strong> which we participate.<br />

This is also <strong>the</strong> case with <strong>the</strong> developmental<br />

hypo<strong>the</strong>ses identified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se remarks by <strong>the</strong> expressivist<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctive <strong>in</strong>terpretations. The purpose of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

hypo<strong>the</strong>ses is not to <strong>in</strong>form us about <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s of religious<br />

<strong>and</strong> magical practices, but to facilitate our underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se practices. This is <strong>the</strong> same function served by<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hypo<strong>the</strong>ses we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Wittgenste<strong>in</strong>’s writ<strong>in</strong>gs, such<br />

as those that associate <strong>the</strong> development <strong>and</strong> acquisition of<br />

language with <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctive or “primitive” reactions (e.g.,<br />

Wittgenste<strong>in</strong> 2001, §244). For Wittgenste<strong>in</strong>’s purposes <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se writ<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> truth of <strong>the</strong>se hypo<strong>the</strong>ses is irrelevant.<br />

Instead, as he puts it, “<strong>the</strong> correct <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

say is not: this has arisen from that, but: it could have<br />

arisen this way” (Wittgenste<strong>in</strong> 1993, p. 153). While <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

truth certa<strong>in</strong>ly makes a difference <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r contexts, it does<br />

not make a difference to Wittgenste<strong>in</strong>’s efforts to relieve us<br />

of certa<strong>in</strong> confusions.<br />
