exceed<strong>in</strong>g 5 percent. Priv<strong>at</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ion programs, <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>at</strong>tention to accur<strong>at</strong>e f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

st<strong>at</strong>ements, and the adoption of <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional account<strong>in</strong>g standards can be<br />

expected to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to propel growth <strong>in</strong> the sector, which will entail expanded<br />

employment and offer new opportunities for professionals and university gradu<strong>at</strong>es<br />

with the appropri<strong>at</strong>e credentials.<br />

A good example is Tunisia, which experienced a 50 percent <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> employment<br />

<strong>in</strong> the account<strong>in</strong>g profession between 1997 and 2004 after the country had<br />

established a well-def<strong>in</strong>ed account<strong>in</strong>g framework requir<strong>in</strong>g professionals to<br />

ensure th<strong>at</strong> public and corpor<strong>at</strong>e reports accur<strong>at</strong>ely reflected the economic situ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of the organiz<strong>at</strong>ions exam<strong>in</strong>ed (World Bank 2008).<br />

While detailed d<strong>at</strong>a on the exports of account<strong>in</strong>g services are scarce, the available<br />

<strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion suggests th<strong>at</strong> a broad range of countries particip<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the trade<br />

<strong>in</strong> account<strong>in</strong>g services. Some middle-<strong>in</strong>come countries, such as Cyprus, the Czech<br />

Republic, and Hungary, gener<strong>at</strong>e substantial <strong>in</strong>come from account<strong>in</strong>g service<br />

exports (table 8.1).<br />
