Meade <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gouge<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>, with help from brothers Joel and Jan, worked <strong>on</strong> the original for over two years, finally bringing it<br />

to publicati<strong>on</strong> in 1979. Rob M<strong>on</strong>roe was part of the original team, c<strong>on</strong>tributing drawings and text, particularly<br />

material <strong>on</strong> lofting. Kay Harley served as editor, and the writing would not have been possible without her patient<br />

encouragement and guidance. Barbara Livingst<strong>on</strong>, Lily Jarmin, and Loren Mohn assisted with publicati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

This 5th editi<strong>on</strong> of the book builds up<strong>on</strong> its predecessors. As explained in the preface, we decided to substantially<br />

revise, reorganize, and update <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gouge<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Brothers</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Boat</strong> C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, but not to rewrite it. From the<br />

technical side, this editi<strong>on</strong> is the distillati<strong>on</strong> of twenty years of feedback from professi<strong>on</strong>al and amateur boatbuilders<br />

whose comments and questi<strong>on</strong>s to the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gouge<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> technical staff have molded every element of the book. Brian<br />

Knight and Tom Pawlak have served as the technical editors for the 5th editi<strong>on</strong>, working for over a year reviewing,<br />

updating, and editing material. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir attenti<strong>on</strong> to detail and sense of quality bears <strong>on</strong> every page. J.R. Wats<strong>on</strong>, Jim<br />

Derck, Glenn House, Patrick Ropp, Bill Bertelsen, and Rob M<strong>on</strong>roe have also provided c<strong>on</strong>tent and additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

review.<br />

Kay Harley returned as editor and prime mover, helping bring the many years of discussi<strong>on</strong> about a new book to<br />

reality. Her respect for the technical expertise and individual writing processes of multiple authors combined with<br />

her critical eye and editing experience to shape the project. Mike Barker’s work as design editor and producti<strong>on</strong><br />

coordinator has also been crucial to this editi<strong>on</strong>. Not <strong>on</strong>ly has Mike made new drawings, revised others, and created<br />

an updated portfolio of photographs reflecting thirty-five years of wood/epoxy boat c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>; he has also<br />

managed all of the details of multiple drafts and the shift to digital producti<strong>on</strong> with this editi<strong>on</strong>. Kristen Lore<br />

assisted with proofreading.<br />
