English measures used in this book. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> standard<br />

c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong>s we have used (sometimes rounded) are<br />

given below, Useful formulas are also provided.<br />

Lumber<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> English terminology for dimensi<strong>on</strong>al lumber is<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>ally given as “nominal size”, not the actual<br />

dimensi<strong>on</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> nominal size is the dimensi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

rough-sawn, green lumber. When dried and surfaced,<br />

the lumber dimensi<strong>on</strong>s become smaller (the actual<br />

dimensi<strong>on</strong>). Metric dimensi<strong>on</strong>s are actual dimensi<strong>on</strong>s,<br />
