Chapter 21 – Laminating Veneer Over a Mold or Plug 247
(100mm to 200mm) wide, which span at least 25%
of the half girth. For clamping pressure as the epoxy
cures, use weights or cinch a line around the hull
roughly the way you’d cinch a saddle on a horse. When
the cradle seats have cured, bond sufficient framework
to them to permit the hull to sit close to its lines when
turned upright.
It’s fairly easy for a group of people to grasp a small,
light hull by its sheer and lift it high enough to clear
its mold. If your hull is too heavy or has to be lifted
too high for people to handle, use a lifting sling and
mechanical assistance. Usually, four pieces of extruded
metal U-shaped channel large enough to fit over the
edge of the hull at the sheer can be used as lifting
points. Each of the pieces might be a foot or more long
in order to distribute load over enough area to prevent
damage to the sheer. You may want to screw the pieces
to the sheer to prevent slipping. Attach a line to them
and fasten it to the lifting apparatus.
Lift the hull clear of its mold and set it on the floor.
Cross brace the sheers in a few places close to the
center of the hull so that they can bear the weight as
the hull rolls. <strong>The</strong>n roll it over into an upright position.
With enough people and padding, most molded hulls
can be rolled by hand. See Chapter 23 for suggestions
on rolling larger hulls.
