Figure 4-4 <strong>Epoxy</strong> can be thickened to the ideal c<strong>on</strong>sistency needed for a particular job. We refer to four comm<strong>on</strong>ly known<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistencies: syrup, catsup, may<strong>on</strong>naise, and peanut butter.<br />

l. Liquid—Open time (also working time or wet lay-up<br />

time) is the porti<strong>on</strong> of the cure time, after mixing,<br />

that the resin/hardener mixture remains a liquid and<br />

is workable and suitable for applicati<strong>on</strong>. All assembly<br />

and clamping should take place during the open time<br />

to assure a dependable b<strong>on</strong>d.<br />

2. Gel—<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> mixture passes into an Initial Cure Phase<br />

(also called the green stage) when it begins to gel, or<br />

kick-off. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> epoxy is no l<strong>on</strong>ger workable and will<br />

progress from a tacky, gel c<strong>on</strong>sistency to the firmness<br />

of hard rubber. You will be able to dent it with your<br />

thumbnail.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> mixture will become tack free about midway<br />

through the initial cure phase. While it is still tacky<br />

(about like masking tape), a new applicati<strong>on</strong> of epoxy<br />

will still chemically link with it, so you may still b<strong>on</strong>d to<br />

or recoat the surface without special preparati<strong>on</strong>. However,<br />

this ability diminishes as the mixture approaches<br />

the final cure phase.<br />

3. Solid—In the Final Cure Phase the epoxy mixture<br />

has cured to a solid state and can be dry sanded. You<br />

will no l<strong>on</strong>ger be able to dent it with your thumbnail.<br />

At this point, the epoxy has reached most of its<br />

is warmer and l<strong>on</strong>ger when the epoxy is cooler.<br />

ultimate strength, so clamps can be removed. A new<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> of epoxy will no l<strong>on</strong>ger chemically link<br />

to it, so the surface of the epoxy must be properly<br />

prepared and sanded before recoating to achieve a<br />

good mechanical, sec<strong>on</strong>dary b<strong>on</strong>d. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> mixture will<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue to cure for the next several days to two<br />

weeks at room temperature, becoming an inert plastic<br />

solid.<br />

When resin and hardener are mixed in proper proporti<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

epoxy will usually gel, or begin to harden, in
