Young farmers’ views on agriculture today
A comparative policy exploration between
Southern Ontario (Canada) and Girona (Spain)
Farmers are ageing around the word. Agrarian rural areas are changing rapidly in
the current era. In this context farming is changing in different ways and we
don’t really know how the agrarian sector will evolve in the future. This new rural
context is also accompanied with new agrarian and rural policies.
The main aim of the research is to know how the new generation of young
farmers will perform in the next few years. It’s important to understand their
attitudes related to the new challenges for farming and to the new policies that
are taking place in rural areas. This project is running as a comparative
exploration between Southern Ontario (Canada) and Girona (Spain).
The basic objectives of the research are:
• To know what is the attitude of the new generation of young farmers
• To identify the main barriers to entry into agrarian sector
• To examine rural policies and programs related to young farmers
• To compare the findings in two agrorural areas
To achieve this objectives the methodology of the study is composed of analyzing
secondary data, examining the main rural policies and programs taking place in
rural areas and working with some primary data. The field work is going to be
undertaken with semi-structured interviews with key actors such as farmers,
policy makers, agribusiness and institutional actors, environmental organizations,
researchers and students.
This is an exploration phase of the research. As a result of this early stage, a full
program research with detailed methodology and analysis will be derived.
