of emotions, making it possible to understand and work through the emotional
content in an interpersonal context.
Concerning the group perspective the role and significance of the group are evident in
the answers to the 5 additional questions. Several patients mentioned the value of
their relationship to others in the group. Their comments regarding this appear to
have to do with reflection: seeing one's own problems reflected in the common
problems of the group, and understanding individual group members through hearing
about the imagery they experienced during the music.
The answers also indicated that the patients were able to profit of their experiences
during music listening, which we attribute to the structuring and containing effect
of the music. When asked what they felt they had benefited most from in the
therapy, a majority of the patients named experiences from the music-listening
phase, experiences that often were remembered very clearly. Several of the patients
found that music and imagery contributed to a better self-understanding, a greater
involvement in the group or a personal experience of metaphorical or realistic
character that made a significant emotional impact. For example, a patient with
many negative symptoms said that he felt inner emptiness and didn't feel he could
contribute with anything to the group in the preliminary conversation. However, he
experienced many images during music listening and this helped him to participate
actively in the group. Another patient with many positive symptoms seemed to be
able to manage his inner fantasy world better through the therapy and ended up in
the last session reflecting over the most important images he had experienced
throughout the course of the therapy. Only one patient did not feel that he had
benefited from therapy. In this connection I must add that this patient, the first
participant in the project, was in a group where a patient (not involved in the
project) committed suicide. This experience had a strong impact on the patient,
and he referred to it in answer to the question of which events had made the
biggest impression on him. It is very likely that this incident may have influenced
the patient's view of the entire course of therapy.
Results - Part 2.
The analysis confirmed the patients’ overall positive view of the therapy as seen in
part 1.
It was possible for me to develop 8 categories in which restitutional factors
occurred, and from the most significant findings, I have formulated a theory of the
