• Qualitative research is empirical and naturalistic. Research takes place in the
natural setting – that is where the musical therapy is actually taking place –
because it is the direct source for gathering data.
Data indsamling er foretaget i musikterapirummet umiddelbart efter hver
session, men selve terapisettingen har ikke direkte været påvirket af

• Qualitative research is descriptive. Sounds/music, words, and pictures rather than
numbers are in focus. Interpretation starts with information contained in the
situation and includes experiences or transcripts of music, 19 transcripts of
interviews, field notes…
Dataindsamlingen er baseret på terapeuternes ”field notes” 20 udfra patienternes
udsagn om deres oplevelser under musiklytning
• Qualitative research is interpretive. A basis condition for our interaction with the
world is that we build our concepts and understanding on our interpretation of the
information our senses provide. Thus, the basic scientific tool must be
hermeneutics, or the science of interpretation
Mit fokus er at beskrive og fortolke patienternes oplevelser under musiklytning.
Udgangspunktet er de informationer jeg får om patienterne herudfra.
• Qualitative research is sometimes based on grounded theory. Data is analysed
inductively, or from what is called a “bottom up” perspective
Jeg har anvendt metoden Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1985) til opbygning
af min analysemodel, hvilket jeg vil uddybe i efterfølgende afsnit om metodevalg.
• Qualitative research emphasizes immediate observations and spontaneous
interpretations…. This .. provides the necessary flexibility – the ability to let us be
moved by the situation, the music….
Dette karakteristika er tænkt i forhold til musikterapiimprovisation, men det er en
ligeså væsentligt faktor i alle former for GIM terapi, hvor terapeuten udfra af
klientens sindstilstand, har brug for at kunne fortolke spontant.
