Theme is defined by Uzzell as ‘an underlying truth about life’. The above headings should<br />

be construed in this light and not confused with those in the Subject Environment Facet,<br />

which refer to the subject setting of the work in question. Haines notes that ‘not all (novels)<br />

convey a theme in this sense of a dominating idea implicit in the whole composition’, and<br />

further observes that the theme or underlying motif is more commonly found in Continental<br />

than in English or American works. Thus, in many cases, the above characteristics will be<br />

diffuse and need not be specified. When in doubt, choose the heading under Subject<br />

Environment. These points, however, do not apply to the Theme – Subjective, where we have<br />

works written under, or catering <strong>for</strong>, a dominant emotion as distinct from an idea.<br />
