Theme is defined by Uzzell as ‘an underlying truth about life’. The above headings should
be construed in this light and not confused with those in the Subject Environment Facet,
which refer to the subject setting of the work in question. Haines notes that ‘not all (novels)
convey a theme in this sense of a dominating idea implicit in the whole composition’, and
further observes that the theme or underlying motif is more commonly found in Continental
than in English or American works. Thus, in many cases, the above characteristics will be
diffuse and need not be specified. When in doubt, choose the heading under Subject
Environment. These points, however, do not apply to the Theme – Subjective, where we have
works written under, or catering for, a dominant emotion as distinct from an idea.
