Fisheries
With Dr. Michael Power (University of Waterloo) and funding
from ArcticNet, the Nunavik Research Centre resumed monitoring
of the Nephijee River fishway that was most recently undertaken
in 2012. The goal this year was to Passive Integrated Transponder
tag 250 Arctic charr, 50 Brook trout, and 50 Round whitefish, as
well as record lengths, in order to monitor the movement and
growth of charr, as well as to monitor species competition. Those
who participated in the monitoring at Dry Bay included Sandy
Suppa (Wildlife technician), Lilian Tran (Fisheries biologist), and
Andrea Storm-Suke (University of Waterloo). Monitoring took
place for a total of 27 days (August 13 to September 6, 2014) during
which 327 Arctic charr, two Brook trout, 14 Round whitefish,
one Atlantic salmon, and three Longnose suckers were witnessed
going through the fishway. One Brook trout and 228 Arctic charr
were tagged and of the 327 Arctic charr, 17 had been previously
tagged during the 2009-2010 tagging season.
