We continue our work on research in different areas, as a member
of the Northern Shrimp Research Foundation. We are very involved
in the planning and development of the shrimp fishery in Northern
Labrador and Davis Strait. Additional effort is being developed
for the annual survey program for Ungava Bay and Hudson Strait.
The Unaaq fishing agreement comes to an end next year and
we have been working on a process with Qikiqtaaluk Corporation
whereby we received proposals from interested companies and
then an arms-length process for evaluation and the prioritizing of
these proposals. Final decisions by Unaaq will be made later in the
year. This year’s operation of Unaaq and the operator Clearwater
Ltd. was very successful.
Recruiting of crew is advancing at a slower rate with very few
new applicants. It should be noted that the average crew member
share was over $120,000.00 per year with a rotation of two trips
on and two off. An average trip is three-and-a-half to four weeks
thereby giving an average of three-and-a-half rotations per year
or between 24 and 28 weeks per year being away from home. As
vessel operations are changing with landings in Greenland, crew
members are also required to have a passport in their possession.
We continue to work with the Nunavut Training Consortium
in Iqaluit, to train six crew members per year, with shared costs
arrangement with the Employment and Training department of
the Kativik Regional Government.
