Inuit. Between the late 1960s and the signing of the JBNQA in 1975,
Arctic Québec went from being a vast neglected territory whose
inhabitants had no say in their own affairs to a nation-in-the making,
with recognized rights and the means to begin building their own
society. Against the odds, Inuit along with their Cree allies opened
the door to a dramatic transformation of their homeland, a process
of empowerment that is still picking up steam forty years later.
Under the direction of Makivik, the film project is being produced
by Studio Pascal Blais in Montréal and directed by Ole Gjerstad.
A short preview will be screened at the 2015 Makivik AGM, and the
film is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2015.
Les quelque 60 heures de pellicule originale illustrent une
période très intense de l’histoire des Inuits du Québec. Entre la fin
des années 1960 et la signature de la CBJNQ en 1975, le Québec
arctique est passé d’un statut de vaste territoire négligé où les
habitants n’avaient pas droit au chapitre à un statut de nation en
devenir possédant désormais des droits reconnus leur permettant
de façonner leur propre société. Contre toute attente, les Inuits et
les Cris ont pavé la voie à une transformation radicale de leur territoire,
un processus d’affirmation de leur autonomie qui se poursuit
toujours quarante ans plus tard.
Le documentaire est produit par le Studio Pascal Blais de
Montréal et réalisé par Ole Gjerstad, sous la direction de Makivik.
Un extrait du documentaire sera projeté lors de l’AGA de Makivik
de 2015. Le film devrait être achevé au cours de l’automne 2015.
