successful race. We also have to pay for room and accommodations
when the mushers make it to the communities. We are happy to
report that there were no major incidents during the race except
for some damage to snowmobiles.
In the last few months we continued working with Université
Laval on the second phase of the survey. There will be surveys done
in Kuujjuaraapik, Salluit and Tasiujaq this winter and results will
be available in the coming year. The objectives of the Harvesting
Survey are to compare harvesting patterns and levels compared
to a survey conducted in the early 1980s. The study will show the
present sharing patterns and put a value on harvested food. We hope
to be able to use the results in discussions with the Governments
about the cost-of-living in Nunavik.
Our department also worked with the Northern Development
Chair on the following initiatives:
• Study on the social impacts of the Raglan mine in Salluit and
Kangiqsujuaq. The chair hired two Inuit research assistants
and a complete report will be available shortly.
• Another report on the socio-economic impacts of mining
royalties is being prepared and will identify alternative ways
for communities to benefit from mining royalties.
• Recently we got a project approval grant for $100,000.00
from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development to study
the Inuit participation in the Nunavik mining industry.
Essentially it is to determine how Inuit participation can
increase and what are the employment, training and cultural
issues affecting it.
Makivik continues to work closely with the Kativik Regional
Government (KRG) and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and
Social Services on the Food Kitchen pilot project. Our department

Mon service a également collaboré avec la Chaire de recherche
sur le développement durable du Nord dans le cadre des initiatives
suivantes :
• L’étude sur les impacts sociaux de la mine Raglan à Salluit et
Kangiqsujuaq pour laquelle la chaire a embauché deux assistants
de recherche inuits. Un rapport complet devrait être publié sous
peu.
• Une étude sur les impacts socioéconomiques des redevances
minières est en préparation afin d’identifier de nouvelles
méthodes pouvant permettre aux communautés de tirer davantage
profit des redevances.
• Nous avons récemment obtenu une subvention de 100 000 $
du ministère des Affaires autochtones et du Développement
du Nord canadien afin d’étudier la participation des Inuits dans
l’industrie minière du Nunavik. Il s’agit d’établir de quelle manière
il serait possible d’accroître la participation des Inuits et de
mesurer les défis liés à l’emploi, à la formation et à la culture.
Makivik poursuit son travail en étroite collaboration avec l’Administration
régionale Kativik (l’ARK) et la Régie régionale de la santé
et des services sociaux du Nunavik (RRSSSN) dans le cadre du projet
pilote de cuisine communautaire. Mon service supervise cet
important projet financé par le gouvernement du Canada et le
Conseil régional de développement Kativik. Le projet a été lancé à
Inukjuak où 1500 repas ont été servis au cours des sept premiers
mois de fonctionnement, incluant la distribution de banique dans la
communauté. L’association des femmes Saturviit gère cette cuisine
