by the government or mining companies (with respect to Impact
Benefit Agreements). By means of this review, the objective is to
ensure that Nunavik Inuit businesses can benefit as much as possible
from contracting opportunities, which would then benefit
Nunavimmiut.
The new Sewing Centre in Inukjuak was completed on budget
in early September. Kautaq Construction, a subsidiary of Makivik
Corporation, carried out the construction. The building will be
transferred to the Northern Village of Inukjuak once the proper
documentation is completed. This was the 12 th centre to be built
in the last few years. If all goes well, Kangirsuk should have its own
sewing centre that will be run entirely by the community in 2015.
Makivik has sponsored the Sewing Machine Repair tour since
2001. The service is well appreciated by Nunavik seamstresses. In
2014 we were not able to find a repairman that would be available
to stay in the communities to conduct the tours.
After much thought and deliberation, we have come to an
understanding with Michel Plante to restart the tour of the Nunavik
communities to service sewing machines in November 2014.
The 13 th running of the Ivakkak dog team race took place last
March. The race included 11 teams from across Nunavik. It started
in Kangiqsujuaq then went on to Kangirsuk, Aupaluk and finished
on March 19 th in Tasiujaq. This year’s top three positions went to the
teams of Allen Gordon, Aisa Surusilak and Willie Cain Jr. Daily race
updates were given on TNI and Tuttavik and people also tracked
the racers through the Ivakkak race website.
In order to run a race such as Ivakkak, we have to hire capable
Inuit who can lead and support such an event. A crew of snowmobilers
skilled in setting up and dismantling camps are essential for a

lieu en mars dernier. La course comprenait 11 équipes de partout

arrêts à Kangirsuk et Aupaluk avant d’atteindre la ligne d’arrivée à
Tasiujaq le 19 mars. Les équipes d’Allen Gordon, d’Aisa Surusilak et
de Willie Cain Jr. occupaient les trois premières positions. La course
pouvait être suivie de manière quotidienne sur TNI et Tuttavik et
par l’entremise du site Web d’Ivakkak.
Une course comme Ivakkak doit pouvoir compter sur du personnel
inuit capable de diriger et de soutenir un tel événement. La
présence d’une équipe de motoneigistes possédant les compétences
pour monter et démonter des campements est essentielle au succès
d’un tel événement. Nous payons les frais d’hébergement et de
séjour des équipes dans les communautés. Aucun incident grave
n’est survenu au cours de la course, sauf de légers dommages à
quelques motoneiges.
Nous avons poursuivi au cours des derniers mois notre travail
avec l’Université Laval concernant la deuxième phase de l’enquête
sur les activités de subsistance. Des visites seront effectuées à
Kuujjuaraapik, Salluit et Tasiujaq cet hiver et les résultats seront
disponibles en cours d’année. Cette enquête vise à comparer les
habitudes de consommation et les niveaux de récolte par rapport
à une enquête semblable menée au début des années 1980.
