Introduction
The Nunavik Youth Hockey Development Program (NYHDP) was
established in 2006. The goal of this program is to develop a minor
hockey structure at the regional level while using hockey, as a vehicle
to encourage youth to persevere and to make positive life choices
that will enable them to succeed in the future. The program intends
to provide this opportunity to youth in all 14 Nunavik communities.
Over the past eight years, the program has grown to provide
opportunities for youth in all youth age categories (Pre-Novice to
Midget) and for both genders. This allows youth from ages five
to seventeen to participate in an organized hockey program. The
NYHDP has set a number of objectives that include encouraging Inuit
youth to behave well, promotes the importance of education, physical
activity, healthy lifestyles, and to develop important life skills.
Increasing Local Appropriation
The 2013-2014 season continued to develop and involve many
Inuit as Local Hockey Trainers (LHTs) and coaches at the community
and select levels. There is a noticeable local appropriation of the
program, which is key to the future of the NYHDP. Since its inception,
the program has developed many youth who have gained
considerable hockey knowledge and leadership skills allowing them
to properly teach hockey to younger kids while becoming positive
young leaders and role models in their community. This has helped
to recruit committed and reliable individuals at the community and
regional level. Once again this season, we counted dozens of LHTs
throughout the 14 Nunavik villages, many of which were Bantam
and Midget youth.
Introduction
Le Programme de développement des jeunes du Nunavik axé sur
le hockey (PDJNH) créé en 2006 utilise le hockey comme source
de motivation pour apprendre aux jeunes à persévérer et à faire
des choix de vie positifs qui favoriseront leur réussite future. Ce
programme est ouvert aux jeunes de toutes les communautés du
Nunavik. Il offre depuis huit ans des activités de hockey organisé
aux enfants et aux jeunes des deux sexes âgés de cinq à dix-sept
ans des catégories prénovice à midget. Le PDJNH a pour objectifs
d’encourager les jeunes inuits à poursuivre leurs études, à adopter
un bon comportement, à être actifs physiquement et à développer
d’importances compétences de vie.
Appropriation locale
Le développement de plusieurs Inuits à titre d’entraîneurs locaux
et dans le cadre du programme Sélect s’est poursuivi en 2013‐2014.
Le PDJNH semble faire l’objet d’une appropriation locale accrue,
ce qui est essentiel pour assurer son avenir. Depuis sa création,
le programme a développé de nombreux jeunes qui ont acquis
des connaissances considérables dans le domaine du hockey et
des compétences de leadership qui leur permettent maintenant
d’enseigner correctement le hockey aux jeunes tout en étant des
modèles positifs dans leur communauté. Le programme peut maintenant
s’appuyer sur la participation d’un grand nombre d’individus
dévoués et fiables dans les communautés et au niveau régional.
Encore une fois cette année, nous avons pu compter sur plusieurs
entraîneurs locaux dans les villages ayant joué aux niveaux bantam
et midget dans leur adolescence.
