oversees this important project funded by the Government of
Canada and the Kativik Local Development Council. The first phase
of the project has started in Inukjuak. For the first seven months of
the project, the Inukjuak Food Kitchen served 1,500 meals including
bannock within the community. The Saturviit Women’s Association
is administrating the community Food Kitchen. The planning for
phase two of the project, which includes setting up community
kitchens in Kuujjuaraapik and Kangiqsualujjuaq is under way. The
goal is to start operations in the first half of 2015.
Makivik continued to work with the KRG on developing a Nunavik
Telecommunications Strategy. Initial meetings were held in the
year: the strategy must look at mid and long-term solutions such as
fiber optics for the future. It will address all communications such
as Internet, telephony and broadcasting.
Nunacell phone service in the four communities continued
throughout the year. We are at a crossroads when it comes to services
provided under Nunacell. With the advent of WIFI networks at
home and work, the usage of our network has declined substantially
and an upgrade is necessary. The CDMA technology that we have
used to date is now becoming obsolete in comparison to the more
popular GSM format. We will have to make systemic changes and
a review of the most cost effective options is currently underway.
The 13 th Nunavik Art Workshops took place in Kuujjuaraapik
from October 22 – November 4 th , 2014. This year we offered training
in carving, jewelry making, beading and wood burning art.
There were 39 participants that benefitted from the experience and
they learnt new techniques on how to create art. Funding for the
workshops comes from Canadian Heritage, the KRG and Makivik.
Airfare discounts from First Air and Air Inuit are also very important
contributions to the event.
communautaire.
