Marine Cargo – NEAS
In 2014, NEAS had 13 voyages and operated five vessels including
the permanent importation of the Erasmusgracht. NEAS made 105
stops into 40 communities, mines, sites of which 10 stops were in
Iqaluit and three stops were in Kuujjuaq.
First sailings into Ungava were early and faced some packed ice.
Although overall ice conditions this year were considered normal,
large pieces of ice in and around Kangiqsujuaq delayed deliveries
to this community. Second sailings had large ice delays in the
Peel Sound where the MV Avataq’s arrival into Cambridge Bay was
delayed due to heavy ice and tardy ice breaker service. Third sailings
experienced gale force winds, freezing shores, heavy swells
and some lost days.
Significant Contracts
NEAS is proud to be the official sealift service provider
for the Iqaluit International Airport Project. NEAS is
pleased to be working with the Government of Nunavut
on this project as well as and all the P3 Airport contractors
involved in this infrastructure initiative.
NEAS is also proud to have been chosen as the
sealift carrier for the Canadian High Arctic Research
Station (CHARS) in Cambridge Bay. In 2007, the Federal
Government committed to build a world-class Arctic
research station that will be on the cutting edge of Arctic
issues, including environmental science and resource
development. The CHARS will provide a world-class hub
for science and technology in Canada’s North.
NEAS transported all the cargoes for the Raglan Mine
Wind Turbine Energy Project in Deception Bay. With the
Transport maritime – NEAS
