<strong>Revitalization</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rivers</strong> In <strong>India</strong><br />

<strong>Draft</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Recommendation<br />

CONCLUSION<br />

To sum it up, <strong>in</strong>terl<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> rivers as a solution should be based<br />

on scientific reason<strong>in</strong>g, and politics or emotions should not determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />

the extent <strong>of</strong> river l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g we do. Interl<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g can be considered<br />

as a flood mitigation measure. <strong>India</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a tropical country with<br />

high evapotranspiration and over-exploited groundwater resources,<br />

<strong>in</strong>terl<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g will serve its purpose <strong>of</strong> irrigation augmentation if water<br />

were to be efficiently transported <strong>in</strong> closed pipes <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> open canals.<br />

A few <strong>in</strong>terl<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g projects have already rolled out. It is suggested that<br />

the economic ga<strong>in</strong>s from these projects are weighed aga<strong>in</strong>st the loss <strong>of</strong><br />

natural resource capital, before embark<strong>in</strong>g on new projects. In <strong>India</strong> rivers<br />

are mostly forest-fed; therefore br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g back the tree cover on the either<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> the river is the only long-term susta<strong>in</strong>able solution to address<br />

water scarcity and reduce the impact <strong>of</strong> floods and droughts.<br />
