turn out to be self-susta<strong>in</strong>ed production systems where<strong>in</strong> zero external <strong>in</strong>puts<br />

like fertilizers and pesticides are used. These k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry systems<br />

can also be subjected to organic farm<strong>in</strong>g certification at the national and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational level to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> additional <strong>in</strong>come and <strong>in</strong>centives.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial and <strong>in</strong>surance sector: Farmers practic<strong>in</strong>g tree-based farm<strong>in</strong>g are<br />

devoid <strong>of</strong> facilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>surance and credit from f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>stitutions and an<br />

organized market<strong>in</strong>g structure. This is a major hurdle <strong>in</strong> boost<strong>in</strong>g agr<strong>of</strong>orestry<br />

among resource-poor farmers. The recommendations for tree <strong>in</strong>surance/credit<br />

cover mentioned <strong>in</strong> NAP will encourage <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong> farmers <strong>in</strong> expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the area under agr<strong>of</strong>orestry. To provide f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance to agr<strong>of</strong>orestry<br />

farmers, bankable projects need to be formulated <strong>in</strong> agr<strong>of</strong>orestry as <strong>in</strong> the case<br />

<strong>of</strong> agriculture and other allied subjects such as horticulture, animal husbandry,<br />

etc. A few tree <strong>in</strong>surance schemes are already operational (Box 4).<br />

BOX 4: Examples <strong>of</strong> tree crop <strong>in</strong>surance schemes<br />

‘Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry Plantation Insurance’ by United <strong>India</strong> Insurance, Chennai,<br />

ensures f<strong>in</strong>ancial protection aga<strong>in</strong>st natural calamities (flood and cyclone),<br />

wild animal damage, and pest and disease for the species that are widely<br />

cultivated <strong>in</strong> the state, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g casuar<strong>in</strong>a, eucalyptus, sissoo, G. arborea,<br />

M. dubia, A. excelsa and subabul. Similarly, <strong>in</strong> Kerala, <strong>in</strong>surance scheme for<br />

coconut and rubber is <strong>in</strong> existence. For mature and immature plantations<br />

<strong>of</strong> rubber, compensation on account <strong>of</strong> natural calamities will be provided<br />

with replacement cost plus future returns <strong>of</strong> present value aris<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong><br />

loss or death <strong>of</strong> the plant. Agricultural Insurance Company <strong>India</strong> Limited is<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g bi<strong>of</strong>uel tree/plant <strong>in</strong>surance for the species such as Jatropha curcas,<br />

Pongamia p<strong>in</strong>nata, Azadirachta <strong>in</strong>dica, Bassia latifolia, Callophyllum <strong>in</strong>ophyllum<br />

and Simarouba glauca at the premium cost <strong>of</strong> 125–150% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>put cost.<br />
