• Vetiver alone is not enough to control pests and must be part of an overall
Integrated Pest Management package that manages crop health.
b. Vetiver as Animal Feed:
• Vetiver leaves are readily eaten by cattle, goats and sheep. Table 2 shows the
nutritive content of vetiver.
• Young vetiver grass is quite
nutritious. Their nutrient
content, like many tropical
grasses, varies according to
season, growth stage and soil
fertility.
• However, the nutritional value
of mature vetiver grass is low,
and it lacks crude protein.
• Vetiver leaves are generally
useful by-products of soil and
water conservation measures.
When vetiver is used for other
purposes, fodder may prove an
added value.
• Vetiver leaves are nutritious when cut (pruned) at intervals between one and
three months, depending on climatic conditions. Vetiver leaves are readily
eaten by cattle, goats and sheep. This Table shows the nutritive value of vetiver
grass.
• Vetiver can grow under very high levels of nitrogen (as much as 10,000 kg of
N per ha). Thus when vetiver is an integral part of a constructed wetland for
waste treatment (animal and human), it will yield over 100 tons of dry matter
per ha and is high in nutrients.
