GROUNDWATER<br />

What we know<br />

More than 60% <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong>’s agriculture is ra<strong>in</strong>-fed,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g the country highly dependent on groundwater.<br />

Even without climate change, 15% <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong>’s<br />

groundwater resources are overexploited.<br />

What could happen<br />

Although it is difficult to predict future groundwater<br />

levels, fall<strong>in</strong>g water tables can be expected to reduce<br />

further on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g demand for water due<br />

to a grow<strong>in</strong>g population, more affluent lifestyles, as<br />

well as the services sector and <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

What can be done<br />

The efficient use <strong>of</strong> groundwater resources will need to<br />

be <strong>in</strong>centivized.<br />
