to this Act. Currently, 252 rivers are protected under the Wild and Scenic<br />

<strong>Rivers</strong> scheme. 13<br />

Canadian Heritage <strong>Rivers</strong> System (CHRS) 1984<br />

“Canada’s outstand<strong>in</strong>g rivers will be nationally recognized and<br />

managed through the support and stewardship <strong>of</strong> local people and<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>cial, territorial and federal governments to ensure the long-term<br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> the rivers’ natural, cultural and recreational values and<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrity.”<br />

The Canadian Heritage <strong>Rivers</strong> System (CHRS), is Canada’s national<br />

river conservation program, established <strong>in</strong> 1984 by the federal, prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

and territorial governments to conserve and protect the best examples <strong>of</strong><br />

Canada’s river heritage, to give them national recognition, and to encourage<br />

the public to enjoy and appreciate them. It is a cooperative program <strong>of</strong> the<br />

governments <strong>of</strong> Canada, all 10 prov<strong>in</strong>ces, and the three territories. CHRS is a<br />

Public Trust and participation <strong>in</strong> the CHRS is purely voluntary.<br />

Interest<strong>in</strong>gly, CHRS not only works with free-flow<strong>in</strong>g rivers, but also<br />

on highly developed rivers like the Grand and Ottawa, to conserve their<br />

heritage character. Currently, 38 rivers are designated as Heritage <strong>Rivers</strong>,<br />

while six are nom<strong>in</strong>ated. These rivers represent Canada’s diverse social,<br />

cultural fabric and its ecosystems.<br />

Wild <strong>Rivers</strong> Project, Australia<br />

Wild rivers, found <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> Australian landscapes, are rivers<br />

that are relatively undisturbed by the impacts <strong>of</strong> modern development.<br />

Biological and hydrological processes cont<strong>in</strong>ue without major <strong>in</strong>terference<br />

<strong>in</strong> the catchments <strong>of</strong> these undammed rivers.<br />

A wild river is def<strong>in</strong>ed as “a channel, channel network, or a<br />

connected network <strong>of</strong> waterbodies, <strong>of</strong> natural orig<strong>in</strong> and exhibit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

overland flow (which can be perennial, <strong>in</strong>termittent or episodic) <strong>in</strong> which:<br />

• the biological, hydrological and geomorphological processes<br />

associated with river flow; and<br />
