CASE STUDY OF RIVER RESTORATION<br />

PROJECT (DANUBE RIVER)<br />

River restoration <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> poses great challenges, due to various factors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

population density, encroachment on floodpla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the river, a multitude <strong>of</strong><br />

stakeholders, as well as conflict<strong>in</strong>g state <strong>in</strong>terests and political <strong>in</strong>terests. In order<br />

to ga<strong>in</strong> valuable <strong>in</strong>sights from other river restoration projects around the world,<br />

cases need to be equally challeng<strong>in</strong>g and complex. In this context, we have chosen<br />

the Restoration Project <strong>of</strong> the Danube River.<br />

Some basic facts about the Danube:<br />

1. It crosses over 19 countries.<br />

2. The length <strong>of</strong> the river is 2860 km<br />

3. Total area <strong>of</strong> the river bas<strong>in</strong> is 801,463 km<br />

1. BASIC FEATURES OF THE DANUBE:<br />

The Danube River Bas<strong>in</strong> (DRB) covers a total area <strong>of</strong> around 801.000 km and<br />

collects water from the territories <strong>of</strong> 19 countries <strong>in</strong> Central and Southeastern<br />

Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic,<br />

Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Ukra<strong>in</strong>e).<br />

Today, around 83 million people <strong>in</strong>habit the DRB. Sixty cities <strong>in</strong> the DRB have a<br />

human population <strong>of</strong> more than 100.000. Culturally, the DRB consists <strong>of</strong> a wide<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> languages, traditions, histories, and religions. The political and social<br />

conditions and the correspond<strong>in</strong>g economic status <strong>of</strong> the DRB countries are more<br />

diverse than those <strong>in</strong> any other European river bas<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The Danube is the second longest river <strong>in</strong> Europe (2826 km), and its large delta<br />

forms an expansive wetland (area: 5640 km) <strong>of</strong> global importance. The mean<br />
