3. GREEN SCHOOL MOVEMENT<br />

Seek<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g about a sense <strong>of</strong> awareness and reverence for nature and to<br />

<strong>in</strong>volve children <strong>in</strong> ecological restoration efforts, PGH has partnered with and<br />

conducted various tree plant<strong>in</strong>g drives and mass awareness campaigns across<br />

schools and colleges.<br />

Green School Movement is a jo<strong>in</strong>t collaboration <strong>of</strong> <strong>Isha</strong> and Tamil Nadu education<br />

department where school children who are members <strong>of</strong> National Green Corps<br />

(NGC) - a program conceptualized and <strong>in</strong>itiated by the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Environment<br />

are tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> sapl<strong>in</strong>g production and plantation.<br />

Green School Movement is designed to create “Eco-consciousness” among<br />

school children through a change <strong>in</strong> their attitude, by <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> sapl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

production and plantation. Each school who is part <strong>of</strong> the movement will take<br />

up a target <strong>of</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g and distribut<strong>in</strong>g 2,000 sapl<strong>in</strong>gs each. PGH will provide<br />

the seeds, cover and technical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to each school. From sow<strong>in</strong>g the seed,<br />

fill<strong>in</strong>g pockets, water<strong>in</strong>g, nurtur<strong>in</strong>g and until plant<strong>in</strong>g all the activities are done<br />

by school children. Children get to experientially see the whole cycle <strong>of</strong> nature ie.<br />

from a seed till it sprouts, becomes a tree, and produces seeds <strong>of</strong> its own. Through<br />

this model, children become aware and beg<strong>in</strong> to relate to trees as Life. The sense<br />

<strong>of</strong> ownership and level <strong>of</strong> commitment with students is high because they have<br />

been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> all aspects <strong>of</strong> nursery production over a period <strong>of</strong> 6 months.<br />

USP: When children see the first two leaves sprout<strong>in</strong>g from the seeds<br />

that they have sown, they immediately relate to trees as a life form.<br />
