4. ISHA AGRO MOVEMENT<br />

Agriculture as it happens <strong>in</strong> Tamil Nadu and elsewhere <strong>in</strong> the<br />

world <strong>in</strong>volves relationship, transaction, <strong>in</strong>teraction and learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

between one farmer and another. But for almost the last three<br />

decades majority <strong>of</strong> the farm<strong>in</strong>g population <strong>in</strong> TN has been<br />

practic<strong>in</strong>g chemical farm<strong>in</strong>g. Traditional system <strong>of</strong> agriculture<br />

has compromised and whatever set <strong>of</strong> package or practices given<br />

to the farmer <strong>in</strong>volves chemical farm<strong>in</strong>g. In situations where<br />

farmers are fac<strong>in</strong>g issues such as climate change or pest attack, the<br />

solutions available are also chemical based. The harsh reality is<br />

that today there is no authority present that can <strong>of</strong>fer directions or<br />

implementable solutions regard<strong>in</strong>g chemical free farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>Isha</strong> Agro Movement (IAM), an <strong>of</strong>fshoot <strong>of</strong> Project GreenHands was<br />

launched <strong>in</strong> the year 2007 to propose a suitable alternative model for<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculture where<strong>in</strong> the key focus was on good economic<br />

returns.<br />

The project aims to accelerate the transition <strong>of</strong> farmers from<br />

chemical based system to susta<strong>in</strong>able system.<br />

With an experience <strong>of</strong> almost a decade, today IAM has spread its<br />

roots across Tamil Nadu. We have established a platform for farmers<br />

who practise susta<strong>in</strong>able farm<strong>in</strong>g with a stable and susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong>come. To build a community <strong>of</strong> natural farmers, state level<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs are organized where experts tra<strong>in</strong> farmers <strong>in</strong> the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> natural farm<strong>in</strong>g. Handhold<strong>in</strong>g and guidance is seen as an<br />

important aspect and maximum support is extended to farmers for<br />

transition<strong>in</strong>g from chemical farm<strong>in</strong>g to natural farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Nearly 750 farmers are under the guidance and follow-up <strong>of</strong> <strong>Isha</strong><br />

Agro movement<br />

USP: Institutionaliz<strong>in</strong>g farmers for mutual learn<strong>in</strong>g (farmer to<br />

farmer) and shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> knowledge<br />
