At least one fourth <strong>of</strong> the villages <strong>in</strong> the country (170,000) are eligible to claim<br />

CFR rights, based on forest land with<strong>in</strong> their revenue village boundaries. N<strong>in</strong>e<br />

states have more than one-third <strong>of</strong> their total villages eligible for CFR rights<br />

recognition.<br />

Districts with a high number <strong>of</strong> villages hav<strong>in</strong>g forest lands are located <strong>in</strong><br />

regions that have an Adivasi majority (Fig. 2).<br />
