INDIAN RIVERS<br />

Water resources and their development are pivotal to growth <strong>of</strong> any civilized<br />

society. <strong>India</strong> with 2.4% <strong>of</strong> the global geographic area supports 17.5% <strong>of</strong> the human<br />

population through 4% <strong>of</strong> the world’s fresh water resources. <strong>India</strong> is among<br />

the foremost countries <strong>in</strong> the world <strong>in</strong> exploit<strong>in</strong>g its river water resources after<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependence for irrigation, generation <strong>of</strong> hydro-power and water supply. Be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an agrarian society, irrigation had acquired <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g importance <strong>in</strong> agriculture.<br />

<strong>India</strong> has the highest irrigated land <strong>in</strong> the world but surpris<strong>in</strong>gly most <strong>of</strong> land<br />

is still under conventional flood irrigation where overall irrigation efficiency is<br />
