<strong>Revitalization</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rivers</strong> In <strong>India</strong><br />

<strong>Draft</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Recommendation<br />

• Bacterial Blight Disease: This is the most devastat<strong>in</strong>g disease on pomegranate<br />

caused by bacterial species Xanthomonas ox<strong>in</strong>ipodies pv. Puniceae. It is a nonsystemic<br />

disease that <strong>in</strong>fects leaf, flower, fruit and stem.. Severe <strong>in</strong>festation<br />

leads to leaves shedd<strong>in</strong>g. Symptoms on stem: The stem start form<strong>in</strong>g brown to<br />

black spots around the nodes. In advanced stages girdl<strong>in</strong>g and crack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> node<br />

occurs which f<strong>in</strong>ally lead to breakdown <strong>of</strong> the branches. Symptoms on fruit:<br />

Brown to black spots appears on the pericarp with ‘L ‘or ‘Y’ shaped cracks on<br />

fruits.<br />

Control measures: No suitable control measures are available till date,<br />

however, to reduce the disease, clean plant<strong>in</strong>g material and orchard sanitation<br />

are heavily recommended. The <strong>in</strong>fected branches should be pasted with<br />

Bordeaux paste. Spray <strong>of</strong> Bordeaux mixture 0.5 %.<br />

Recently, IIHR-Bioconsortium is known to give a good control <strong>of</strong> the bacterial<br />

Blight disease.<br />

• Fungal Wilts/ Rots: This disease is caused by fungal organism Fusarium<br />

oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani, Ceratocystis fimbriata. Common symptoms<br />

<strong>of</strong> this disease are yellow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> leaves <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle branch, sudden wilt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

leaves and dry<strong>in</strong>g plant, vertical stem crack<strong>in</strong>g and brown discoloration <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>ternal root tissue and pith <strong>of</strong> stem. Control measures: Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> proper<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>age <strong>of</strong> water, Use <strong>of</strong> biocontrol agent like Trichoderma culture also found<br />

effective.<br />

• Insect and pest: Thrips, Aphids and Mealybugs-<br />
