<strong>Draft</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Recommendation<br />

Tropical dry evergreen forest species and water-tolerant species were used <strong>in</strong> the water<br />

catchment and waste land areas respectively. All resources – sapl<strong>in</strong>gs, pitt<strong>in</strong>g material,<br />

and protective gear – were provided by Greenhands. Sapl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> avenue trees were planted<br />

at the roadsides by the local community, with sapl<strong>in</strong>gs, pitt<strong>in</strong>g material and protective<br />

gear provided by Greenhands. (Refer ANNEXURE VI for the tree plant<strong>in</strong>g procedure<br />

criteria and methodology follow<strong>in</strong>g while pitt<strong>in</strong>g and plant<strong>in</strong>g). Speak<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

plantation on the roadside, A Murugesan, a Greenhands volunteer, who worked <strong>in</strong> Erode 12<br />

based KGM S<strong>of</strong>twares Pvt. Ltd. said, “It is very difficult to f<strong>in</strong>d place to plant trees”.<br />

POST-PLANTATION CARE<br />

Post-plantation care for the sapl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>cluded water<strong>in</strong>g, organic manur<strong>in</strong>g, prun<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

replant<strong>in</strong>g, and protect<strong>in</strong>g the sapl<strong>in</strong>g from graz<strong>in</strong>g animals. In water catchment areas<br />

and wasteland areas, Greenhands engaged paid self-help groups to provide this postplantation<br />

care. In other areas, like farmland, schools, residential areas etc. the sapl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

planters were responsible for ensur<strong>in</strong>g post-plantation care.<br />

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT<br />

“In the <strong>India</strong>n culture there are temples for trees, people worship trees; it’s a very common practice.<br />

It is not a question <strong>of</strong> a custom. It came from a certa<strong>in</strong> experience and understand<strong>in</strong>g. It is a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> experience and understand<strong>in</strong>g — you understand that whatever nurtures your life<br />

is worth worshipp<strong>in</strong>g.” 13 ~ Sadhguru<br />

It was realized that the success <strong>of</strong> the project depended on strong partnerships. The<br />

project focused on develop<strong>in</strong>g partnerships by energiz<strong>in</strong>g community, whether they were<br />

farmers, school go<strong>in</strong>g children, bus<strong>in</strong>essmen, academicians, parents etc. Community<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement thus became the essence <strong>of</strong> the project.<br />

GreenHands volunteers visited villages and spoke to the farmers, assess<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

<strong>of</strong> the people there. The villagers were showed documentaries and discussions were<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated among the villagers and with the villagers. When the volunteers felt that there<br />

was sufficient commitment among the villagers who owns lands, they were <strong>in</strong>itiated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the next level – <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g trees along with the prevail<strong>in</strong>g crops. At the district<br />

level, a regional <strong>of</strong>fice was set up and this hub was used to share resources dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

project period. “The uniqueness <strong>of</strong> this project is that we are <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g large number <strong>of</strong><br />

people, common people, <strong>in</strong> plant<strong>in</strong>g trees. The volunteers – they are all jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g because<br />
