Know your farmer<br />

Organize weekly farmer markets like weekly haats and<br />

broadcast about them on radio and other media that are<br />

specific to cities. Encourage people to visit.<br />

Organize exposure visits to the farms around a city.<br />

L<strong>in</strong>k farmers and consumers by organiz<strong>in</strong>g farmer groups to<br />

give presentations to city audiences.<br />

Children and pregnant<br />

women should consume<br />

fruits<br />

Facilitate FPOs to tie up with anganwadi and heath care<br />

workers <strong>of</strong> the villages.<br />

Give fruits as part <strong>of</strong> mid-day meal, preferably organically<br />

grown<br />

Work with the Department <strong>of</strong> Education and Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Women and Child Welfare to facilitate this.<br />

Buy directly from<br />

farmers <strong>of</strong> FPOs<br />

Awareness campaigns about what it takes to produce fruit,<br />

value cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> the produce, and why organically grown fruits<br />

tend to cost more.<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture can develop an app to aggregate<br />

the locations <strong>of</strong> all farmers and FPOs. This can be used by<br />

consumers to locate farmers and directly transact with them.<br />

INDUSTRIES<br />

The relationship <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustries with the forest, rivers and the farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

community will have a huge impact on the quality <strong>of</strong> work done to<br />

revitalize rivers. Industries play two important roles <strong>in</strong> the revitalization<br />

<strong>of</strong> rivers:<br />

• As the primary water user and effluent generator.<br />

• As buyers <strong>of</strong> produce from tree farmers.<br />

INDUSTRY AS A WATER USER<br />

Although the <strong>in</strong>dustrial sector uses a lot less water (15%) than<br />

agriculture, they still account for a substantial quantum <strong>of</strong> water (~100<br />

Billion Cubic Meters) usage <strong>in</strong> the country.<br />
