The lead<strong>in</strong>g fruit-produc<strong>in</strong>g states between 2009-10 & 2014-15 are Andhra<br />

Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. The<br />

states lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> production <strong>of</strong> various fruits <strong>in</strong> this period are:<br />

Trend l<strong>in</strong>es for productivity <strong>in</strong>dicate that the productivity <strong>of</strong> fruits has not<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased. Productivity <strong>of</strong> crops like banana, citrus fruits, papaya, p<strong>in</strong>eapple,<br />

guava and sapota have recorded susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>crease but the productivity <strong>of</strong><br />

mangoes and litchi are almost stagnant or sagg<strong>in</strong>g whereas, grapes, apples<br />

and p<strong>in</strong>eapples have recorded fluctuat<strong>in</strong>g productivity due to adverse weather<br />

conditions and disease <strong>in</strong>festation. This may be attributed to lack <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>kage<br />

between Government-supported area expansion programmes and availability<br />

<strong>of</strong> quality plant<strong>in</strong>g materials, low productivity <strong>of</strong> old and senile plantations and<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> Government scheme components deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g productivity <strong>of</strong><br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g orchards (Plann<strong>in</strong>g Commission, op. cit.).<br />

Most horticulture crops are grown with assured irrigation and, therefore, are more<br />
