<strong>Draft</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Recommendation<br />

From 1997-2002, there has been a general <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the area under<br />

cultivation <strong>of</strong> fruits, vegetables, plantation crops and spices dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

<strong>in</strong>itial period, followed by a phase <strong>of</strong> stagnation for fruits and vegetables.<br />

The trend <strong>in</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> area for fruits and vegetables was restored<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g 2005-2007 and dur<strong>in</strong>g 2007-2012 the rate <strong>of</strong> growth <strong>in</strong>creased. 42<br />

The lead<strong>in</strong>g fruit-produc<strong>in</strong>g states between 2009-10 and 2014-15<br />

were Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and<br />

Uttar Pradesh. The states lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> production <strong>of</strong> various fruits <strong>in</strong> this<br />

period are given <strong>in</strong> Table 5.<br />

Trend l<strong>in</strong>es for productivity <strong>in</strong>dicate that the productivity <strong>of</strong> fruits<br />

has not <strong>in</strong>creased as much as vegetables. Productivity <strong>of</strong> crops like<br />

banana, citrus fruits, papaya, p<strong>in</strong>eapple, guava and sapota have recorded<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>crease. However, the productivity <strong>of</strong> mangoes and litchi are<br />

almost stagnant or sagg<strong>in</strong>g, whereas, grapes, apples and p<strong>in</strong>eapples have<br />
