<strong>Revitalization</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rivers</strong> In <strong>India</strong><br />

<strong>Draft</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> Recommendation<br />

Depend<strong>in</strong>g on the <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> farmers / members <strong>of</strong> the cooperative<br />

society, the area covered for irrigation <strong>in</strong> such schemes may be scattered.<br />

In western Maharashtra, there are a few success stories <strong>of</strong> co-operative<br />

drip irrigation schemes, where, on a pilot basis, the government has given<br />

special assistance to promote drip irrigation <strong>in</strong> these areas. The Gotkh<strong>in</strong>di &<br />

Bambavade farmer’s co-operatives are ground break<strong>in</strong>g schemes that have<br />

performed remarkably well <strong>in</strong> revolutioniz<strong>in</strong>g the concept <strong>of</strong> lift irrigation.<br />

The fourth model <strong>in</strong>volves Government Lift Irrigation Projects,<br />

where<strong>in</strong>, an advanced Automated Drip Irrigation through a close conduit<br />

network is proposed <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> conventional canal networks and flood<br />

irrigation. The ma<strong>in</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> for such Lift and Drip Irrigation<br />

Projects are:<br />

Avoid permanent land acquisition, which is becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

difficult and expensive<br />

Equitable distribution <strong>of</strong> water<br />

••<br />

Doubl<strong>in</strong>g irrigation area with exist<strong>in</strong>g limited, available water<br />

••<br />

Decrease the gap between Irrigation Potential Created (IPC) and<br />

Irrigation Potential Utilized (IPU).<br />
