Area under agr<strong>of</strong>orestry: Lack <strong>of</strong> uniform methodology adopted by different<br />

agencies results <strong>in</strong> vary<strong>in</strong>g estimates <strong>of</strong> the total area under agr<strong>of</strong>orestry. The<br />

current approximate area under agr<strong>of</strong>orestry is estimated to be 25.32 mha, or 8.2<br />

percent <strong>of</strong> the total geographical area <strong>of</strong> the country accord<strong>in</strong>g to Dhyani (2014).<br />

Based on data from Central Agro-Forestry Research Institute (CAFRI), Jhansi and<br />

remote sens<strong>in</strong>g data <strong>of</strong> Bhuvan LISS III, the area under agr<strong>of</strong>orestry is 13.75 mha.<br />

However, <strong>India</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Forests Report 2013 by Forest Survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> estimated<br />

the area as 11.54 mha, which is 3.39 percent <strong>of</strong> the geographical area <strong>of</strong> the<br />

country. Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan rank high <strong>in</strong> state-wise area under<br />

agr<strong>of</strong>orestry. The latter two estimates are depicted <strong>in</strong> Figure 3.<br />
