We as a civilization have lived susta<strong>in</strong>ably well s<strong>in</strong>ce the Harappan<br />

times without the threat <strong>of</strong> deplet<strong>in</strong>g water resources, which we are fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

today. We were irrigat<strong>in</strong>g, conduct<strong>in</strong>g trade, us<strong>in</strong>g our water resource for<br />

our daily needs, all <strong>of</strong> it reasonably well. So how did we reach the present<br />

water crisis – dry<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> rivers, ponds and lakes, and overexploited<br />

groundwater? Before we try to understand this, it will be useful to have a<br />

perspective on what rivers mean to human be<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
