CANOPY MANAGEMENT<br />

• Remove root stock sprouts and low ly<strong>in</strong>g branches nearer to ground to facilitate<br />

easy cultural operations.<br />

• Remove overlapp<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>tercross<strong>in</strong>g, diseased, dried and weak branches <strong>in</strong> old<br />

trees to get good sunlight and aeration.<br />

• Carry out judicious prun<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternal branches dur<strong>in</strong>g August –<br />

September, once <strong>in</strong> three years.<br />

• Do not allow flower<strong>in</strong>g up to three years by remov<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>florescences as and<br />

when they appear.<br />

• Reta<strong>in</strong> two healthy shoots by trimm<strong>in</strong>g away the weak shoots among the<br />

crowded term<strong>in</strong>al shoots dur<strong>in</strong>g August-September annually.<br />

• Prune back 20 cm <strong>of</strong> annual growth <strong>of</strong> the term<strong>in</strong>als immediately after harvest.<br />

• Irrigate the field immediately after prun<strong>in</strong>g to hasten buds to sprout.<br />

PLANT PROTECTION<br />

• Pests- suck<strong>in</strong>g pests like Hopper, Leaf galls and Aphids, Mealy bug.<br />

• To control these, spray Neem oil or neem kernel extract , followed by<br />

spray<strong>in</strong>g with Biocontrol agents like Verticillium lecanii - 0.5 - 1.0 %, which<br />

affects all stages <strong>of</strong> these pests.<br />

• Nut Weevil and Stem borer : spray Metarhizium anisopliae - 0.5 - 1.0 % which<br />

affects all stages <strong>of</strong> these pests.<br />

• Anthracnose and powdery mildew : Spray Psuedomonas fluorescence @ 0.5 -1.0<br />

% 4-5 times start<strong>in</strong>g from August –September itself at 30-45 days <strong>in</strong>terval.<br />

• Fruit fly- Use Pheromone traps @ 4-5 per acre dur<strong>in</strong>g the Fruit development<br />

phase<br />

• Sooty mould- Maida 5% (1 kg Maida or starch) boiled with 1 lit <strong>of</strong> water and<br />

diluted to 20 litres will control the <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> sooty mould. Avoid spray<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g cloudy weather<br />
