At 0105, RHC in English on 9820 reading a press report we have seen
several other places, about Cuba's latest accusations of US aggression by
daring to broadcast to Cuba on so many freqs for so many hours. Well,
RHC's broadcasts to the US are just as hostile, and they get thru
unimpeded and without objection from this free society. Recheck at 0142,
RHC was missing from 9820, letting thru something weak in South Asian
lang, scheduled FEBA Marathi via Austria, but a few seconds later, RHC
popped back on blocking it completely. Meanwhile checked 6000 for // and
found RHC English there was running slightly behind 9820, due to different
feed routing.
DRM [see also under Chile and Ecuador]
On 5972: Today only a data channel was transmitted on this freq at 1500
UT. No audio signal. The label was: Data Service: Synchronous Stream Mode
Bit Rate 5,52 kpbs / ID: 1193046
(Patrick Robic-AUT, dxld Apr 20)
It's a data sce:
(Mike Barraclough-UK, dxld)
Auf 5972 kHz ist zur Zeit ein DRM-Signal aktiv mit dem Label Data Service:
Synchronous Stream Mode Bit Rate 5,52 kpbs / ID: 1193046. Audio-Signal
wird keines gesendet, nur 1 Daten Kanal. Ich bin mit DRM ja grundsaetzlich
nicht gluecklich, aber ich finde sowas hat in den Rundfunkbaendern nun
wirklich nichts verloren.
(Patrick Robic, Austria, A-DX April 20)
5972 I forgot to point out a particular aspect of the strange data txion
from Juelich: It uses a bandwith of just 5 kHz instead of the usual 10
kHz. Apparently the center freq of 5972 is meant to mimic an analogue USB
txion on 5970 where in fact 5970 would be the place of the suppressed
carrier while the actual, radiated HF signal spreads from 5970.2 to 5974.5
(assuming an audio cut-off at 4.5 kHz). I suspect this mode is indeed
meant for broadcast use but for now they hesitated from putting on audio
with 5.5 kbps, poorer than a cell-phone.
(Kai Ludwig-D, wwdxc BC-DX Apr 22)
I haven't got a clue what the programme is but the freq really does appear
to be 5972. The DRM noise is too strong and intense to tell if any other
is using 5970 but the offset does not appear to be due to adjacent
stations in my area as none are audible at 1540 on 5965 or 5975 or 5980.
DRM "cut off" appears to be sharper than normally is the case but there is
still awful "hash" to contend with each side of nominal. Perhaps this
would be called "side-splash" if the broadcast was in the AM mode?
