Another test, for what client? (gh, dxld June 7)
DRM - All except DRM.
Since writing this reply, I have done some 'Googleing'. Apparently the
Maximum amount of channels in a DRM Complex is Four, my apologies for
saying 6 or 8.
Although this reduces Band Management Possibilities to what I had thought,
it would then be possible to fit Four Streams on 15Khz as opposed to the
present Three, on Analogue Shortwave. The Quality to the Recipient will be
hugely increased and the Power Needed to Transmit will be very much
reduced however, I am concerned about Digital Effects such as DAB type
Bubbling etc. as all Digital Modes are On or Off. For Nostalgic Reasons
SWL/Dxers will of course lose the legendary fading etc. This is too long
an 'argument' to develop here, but I would be interested in others re-
actions.
(Ken Fletcher, BrDXC-UK June 12)
Evidence from DXers who have tested some of the early DRM prototype
receivers is that in reality DRM needs a VERY strong and stable signal to
work properly. Any fading and the audio just cuts out. With an analogue
fade at least you can still hear the audio - but this is not the case with
DRM. This cutting out of the audio can make listening to SW DRM a painful
experience and not one that many listeners would put up with. DRM might
work technically on medium wave and FM but, in my opinion, the
unacceptable price for this would be to make millions if not billions of
existing analogue receivers redundant.
Also, in considering any (questionable) power savings on the txion side,
you need to take into account the huge increase in power consumption of
digital receivers (both DAB and DRM) compared to their analogue
equivalents.
ECUADOR HCJB Deutsch - Translation of the enclosed summary of statements
made yesterday by HCJB's Iris Rauscher at Vienna:
The construction of the new airport near Pifo has been stopped. Hence no
further antennas will be dismantled, i.e. the status quo will be kept for
the time being. In any case they plan to keep the German sce on SW, using
another tx site if one day Pifo will no longer be available.
(translated by Kai Ludwig-D, June 11)
Vom Hoerertreffen mit Iris Rauscher in Wien, am 10. Juni 2006:
