ARRL Monitoring System/Intruder Watch Liaison Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, says
he's been able to hear the jammer from W1AW. In July, when the same jammer
also was appearing on 18160, Bihlmayer alerted telecom authorities in
Germany and Hong Kong, as well as IARU Region 3 and the PRC embassy in
Berlin to the situation. The 17-meter band also is a worldwide exclusive
Amateur Radio allocation. Skolaut says he's received reports about the mx
jammer from all over the US, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico as
well as from New Zealand.
TAJIKISTAN 17560 Voice of Tibet Clandestine fair at 1110 in steady
constantly repeated tones, not mx. The location as per logs by UK DXers in
UKRAINE Radio Ukraine International confirmed with German after 1700 on
new 5830. Really poor signal, even outdoors providing only noisy
reception. Either they are running the tx at grossly reduced power (say,
20 kW or so), or the performance of the antenna is really bad. A couple of
years ago the signals from this site were not so sorry but rather what one
would expect from 100 kW facilities.
UNIDENTIFIED 7200, tuning around Sept 16 at 1312 I also encountered the
"yelping jammer" Mark Taylor described in dxld 6-136, but this was later
than his log, at 1125-1227+ UT. However, at first I took it to be a
maladjusted tx rather than a jammer, describing it as warbling, i.e. tx
freq unstable with BFO on. I thought the lang was English, but not sure,
plus mx. Hams nearby weren't bothered and went on with SSB QSOs. Recheck
at 1347, now it sounded more like whoop-whoop jamming.
Also checking the various online schedules, nothing likely as a target
found. R. JPN starts up at 1330 in Thai, but in the 1300-1330 semihour,
there is Yakutsk in Russian during its 20-hour broadcast ending at 1500
UT. ILG, however, notes 24/7 'noise jamming' on 7200 in East Africa;
presumably that would be against Sudan National Radio which EiBi has on
7200 at 0300-0830 & 1100-1500. It still seems unlikely either of us would
be hearing anything for EaAfrica at this hour on 7 MHz, so still wonder if
there is some new clandestine on 7200 attracting jamming.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 17)
I suspect this is Yakutsk. The tx used on this freq is often - very often
- faulty and sending out more noise than broadcast. I would call it a
warble rather than a "yelp" but it might sound differently if heard louder
than I hear it. I haven't been able to receive Yakutsk (mornings) during
our summer months, but on checking this morning (Sept 17) at around 0630
UT I could clearly hear the same old noise under Bulgaria. The tx was
fixed for a short time last winter and normal sce resumed, but it didn't
last for long. I suggest that you try to compare what you hear on 7200
with // 7140 or 7345. Of course, later in the day there could be "real
jamming" of something that I'm not aware of either.
