Indos; the 4 stations mentioned above were all in the S-9 plus 5-10 dB
range.
4749.95 RRI Makassar 1305-1401* Sep 23. Noted with Jak program at 1305;
local programming (mx) from 1318-1401 per spot checks; the last selection
was what might be described as "Indonesian rap"; station left the air
unceremoniously in mid-rap at 1401*. Xlnt signal today.
4789.97 RRI Fak-Fak 1315-1400* Sep 23. Koran recitations (perhaps for
Ramadan, which starts today, I believe); 1318 a half-minute of primitive
string mx, sounding not unlike the west African cora; M ancr spoke for 5
mins, followed by a program of vocal mx with same M ancr hosting; 1357
close-down anmts, with lilting "Love Ambon" theme in background; carrier
off at 1400. VG signal, rendering the CODAR QRM no more than a minor
nuisance.
4604.95 RRI Serui noted with 1402 UT closedown w/no fanfare.
IRAN/IRAQ UNIDS: Cf. BC-DX 771, was and is 4044 kHz, the new freq of
"Eira Dengi ... K-na IRN", acc. to the ID and jammed by IRN. Sept 14.
(Rumen Pankov-BUL, wwdxc BC-DX Sept 14)
I am hearing a clandestine on various freqs (hopping to avoid jamming)
below and above 4050. As far as I can tell the Kurdish ID goes something
like this "Eira Dengi Khabati Kurdistani Irana". So this should be VO the
Struggle of Iranian Kurdistan. I can hear nothing that is steady on 4044,
only this mentioned one with freq shifts at times.
JAPAN [non] This weekend's "World Interactive" on NHK Warido Radio JPN
has a feature on upcoming R. St. Helena special. Tuned in too late Sat
Sept 23 on 6110 via Canada at 0536 as Toshi Ohtake segment was ending, but
then they played a song, "Isle of St. Helena" by an Irish singer. She
pronounced it correctly, huh-LEE-nuh, but both M&W hosts, one before and
one after, pronounced HELL-uh-nuh, as if they didn't even listen to the
song.
Is this show made up of pieces edited together by someone else rather than
flowing along in real time as it seems? Numerous repeats into UT Monday if
one intunes earlier in the hour. If R. St. Helena accomplishes nothing
else, we can hope that correct pronunciation of the island will spread;
sure.
Myth of Tokyo Rose. Death ends the myth of Tokyo Rose.
Iva Toguri D'Aquino, widely known as Tokyo Rose, who has died in Chicago
aged 90, remains the only US citizen convicted of treason and pardoned by
her country.
When she was convicted by a court in San Francisco in 1949, few worried
that the case against her rested almost entirely on the word of two US-
born men who worked on a Japanese propaganda radio station during World
War II.
A US citizen of Japanese descent trapped in JPN when war broke out, Toguri
had worked under their supervision, allegedly broadcasting fictitious
propaganda to US troops in an effort to undermine their morale.
(...) She was jailed for 10 years and fined $10,000, but was released
after six years for good behaviour. After her release she settled in
Chicago, opened a business and sought to clear her name.
(...) She risked her life in Tokyo in the war, taking medicines and food
